Sorry, We Are Not In Right Now

Hi,

Thanks for checking out our blog, we really appreciate it.

However, our blog has moved to http://travel2dot0.wordpress.com/

Sorry that you have to visit another site to find us, but it is worth it...we have all of our 'classic' posts and comments on the new blog, plus a ton of new thoughts and ideas.

Why are we moving? Basically, Blogger failed us and never responded to our emails and requests. A clear example of poor customer service...too bad, we liked Blogger.

Come over and see us on the new blog.

Regards,
Troy and Mo

Take Control of Your Website

There are many reasons why corporate and artist sites should not carry advertising. But the most obvious one is that outside ads change the conversation. In one of the few places that a marketer can completely control their message; they're sharing the stage with outsiders who have a different agenda. >>Full Story

Thoughts// This interesting experiment (or cruel prank depending on your point of view) reported in the Silicon Alley Insider, is a prime example of why you shouldn't allow outside Google text ads within your site. For a period of time this week, Columbia Records website ran a targeted prank ad featured above that read: "Major Labels are Obsolete...RIP or learn and thrive". The ad was delivered to more than 6,000 site visitors and generated a click rate of 0.6% (4 clicks). Small impact but nevertheless an important lesson to all of us on the dangers of contextual advertising and networks!

~ Happy Friday! (PS: I am still wondering how we have so many Michigan folks here!)

Personally, I've never been a fan of ads on websites, particularly third party ads, but, in my opinion, this article illustrates a prime reason to not include third-party ads. The site owner doesn't have control of them and I think there are still a great many people out there who think that the site owner chooses which ads appear or not on their site.

If I were to have ads displayed on a site that I was associated with, I would make sure that they could be controlled so that only select ads that have gone through an approval process would be displayed to ensure that they match the site's mission.

Troy and Mo stated early on that one of the reasons for doing the competition was to get new people to sample this site. The viral efforts run by many of the states during the competition certainly has done that. Troy/Mo, have you seen a corresponding jump in subscribers to Travel 2.0? Hope so! Love what you are doing. Happy Monday!

Hello Anonymous and Anonymous,

To the first comment, the idea behind this poll was simply a friendly competition between state-level DMOs. Certainly not a scientific survey to determine the best travel site, really more of a popularity contest.

In which case, yes, Michigan and other states have sent out emails, called friends, etc. to get votes. All of which is perfectly legal within the very basic set of rules established for the showdown.

Finally, hate is a very strong word, I would recommend using it less.

Comment #2, thank you for helping to clarify the showdown. Certainly a benefit of holding the showdown has been increased traffic (and yes, our numbers keep going up!), but that was not our primary goal.

It was just a simple way to get state DMOs to look at each others websites and begin thinking about their own design, goals and audience.

Add in a little hype and sarcasm and you get the Great Travel Site Showdown.

Thanks all!
Troy
